Powered by a proven hollow-frame concept, the LUW/LWE Cylinder Block is built with robust gray cast iron and reinforced by an aluminum oil pan. This unique structure provides increased rigidity in the engine/transmission assembly and heightened durability to handle greater loads than before, all while reducing noise, vibrations AND harshness for a smoother drive experience.
The 1.8L engine uses lightweight components for improved balance and strength, resulting in a decreased reciprocating mass that yields an exceptional performance feel as the revs build. The connecting rods are forged from steel with widened I-beams to give extra stability without compromising on weight.
For better thermal regulation and more consistent oil supply to the cam phasers and piston jets, a lightweight liquid-to-liquid cooler has been fitted onto this engine. Weighing in at less than three pounds, it provides an effective drop in temperature without affecting typical pressure levels of the oil flow. The integration with the cooling system further optimizes performance; allowing for quick warming up so that optimal viscosity/friction can be reached after a cold start sooner!
A stainless steel exhaust manifold with a close-coupled catalytic converter effectively reduces emissions during engine start up. This lighter design significantly speeds the flow of air, which then allows for quicker expulsion of exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. Moreover, since this catalyst is located closer to the hot spots around an engine's ports and manifolds, it rapidly attains its optimal temperature level more quickly; meaning cleaner overall performance upon vehicle ignition!
