Ford's 4.0L (V6) engines

Ford’s 4.0L is a V6 engine that’s part of the Cologne family of engines, and is designed for use in Ford’s SUVs and pickup trucks.

The base engine consists of:

  • Cast iron engine block and aluminum cylinder head
  • Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC)
  • Jackshaft timing chain
  • Sequential multi-port fuel injection

Engine specifications include:

  • A displacement of 245 cubic inches (4,015 cubic centimeters)
  • 3.94 in x 3.31 in (100 mm x 84 mm) cylinder bore and piston stroke
  • 9.0:1 compression ratio
  • 207 to 216 horsepower (154 to 161 kW) at 5,250 rpm
  • 238 to 254 lb-ft (323 to 344 Nm) of torque at 3,000 rpm

The Ford 4.0L was used in some Ford applications, including the Ranger, Explorer, and Mustang—it was also used in the Mazda B-Series, Mercury Mountaineer, and Land Rover Discovery.

Some of these early SOHC engines were known for timing chain rattle issues, but were eventually mitigated in later years by modifications to the design of the engine timing chain system.

Overall, the Ford 4.0L is a powerful engine, capable of providing many years of reliable, trouble-free operation when properly maintained.

The Ford 4.0 Liter Engine was used in various Ford and Mazda vehicles from 2000 to 2012. Here is a list of some of the car models and years that used this engine:

  • 2000-2010 Ford Explorer
  • 2000-2010 Mercury Mountaineer
  • 2000-2009 Mazda B4000
  • 2001-2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
  • 2001-2005 Ford Ranger
  • 2005-2010 Ford Mustang
  • 2006-2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
  • 2007-2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin
  • 2007-2011 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
  • 2007-2011 Mercury Grand Marquis

It's important to note that some of these models had different engine variants available, so not all of them necessarily had the 4.0 Liter engine as standard. However, the 4.0 Liter engine was a popular option for many of these vehicles, especially for the Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs.

A core deposit is a charge added to the purchase of most engines or transmissions. We use the term "deposit" because once your new part is installed, we'll graciously pick-up your old engine or transmission free of charge and then refund the core deposit you paid.
