1.4L MultiAir Engine Fitment: Which Vehicles Use It?

Chrysler (now Stellantis) built the 1.4L MultiAir at its Dundee, Michigan engine plant starting in 2010 for the Fiat 500's U.S. launch. It later went into the Dodge Dart, Jeep Renegade and several Fiat models. Here is every U.S. application we build for:

How the 1.4L MultiAir System Works

Most engines open their intake valves directly off a camshaft. The 1.4L MultiAir puts a pressurized oil chamber and a solenoid-controlled valve between the cam and each intake valve. The engine computer opens and closes that solenoid to change how far and how long each intake valve opens, cylinder by cylinder, on every stroke.

The result is strong low-end torque and good fuel economy from a small engine. The tradeoff is that the MultiAir unit, often called the "brick" or "MultiAir actuator," depends completely on clean oil at the right level and pressure. That is why oil care is the number one factor in 1.4L engine life.

Common 1.4L MultiAir Engine Problems

These are the failures we see most often in 1.4L engines that come back to us as cores:

MultiAir actuator failure

Rough idle, misfires on several cylinders, MultiAir codes, or a no-start. Often caused by low oil, wrong oil or sludge.

Oil starvation damage

The 1.4L holds a small amount of oil. Running it low wears bearings, cams and the turbo fast, leading to knocking and low oil pressure.

Turbocharger failure

Turbo models can suffer worn turbo bearings and oil seals. Symptoms include blue smoke, whining, oil consumption and loss of boost.

Broken timing belt

Because the 1.4L is an interference engine, a snapped belt usually bends valves and can damage pistons and the head.

Overheating

Coolant leaks or a failed water pump can warp the cylinder head and blow the head gasket.

Excessive oil consumption

Worn rings and valve seals, often after earlier oil starvation, cause oil burning and fouled plugs.

Signs Your 1.4L Engine Needs Replacement

  • Knocking or ticking that gets louder with RPM
  • Low oil pressure warning that won't go away
  • Repeated misfire or MultiAir trouble codes
  • Blue or white exhaust smoke
  • Metal shavings in the oil
  • Failed compression or leak-down test
  • No-start after a timing belt failure
  • Coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant
  • Heavy oil use between changes
  • Major loss of power or boost

When repairs to the head, turbo and bottom end add up, a zero-mile remanufactured engine is usually the better value, and it comes with a fresh warranty.

How Fraser Remanufactures Every 1.4L Engine

Fraser 1.4L engines are not used pull-outs or quick rebuilds. Every engine is torn down to the bare block and rebuilt by ASE-certified technicians and master machinists.

  1. Complete teardown and cleaning. The engine is fully disassembled and every part is cleaned and inspected.
  2. Precision re-machining. The block, crank and cylinder head are machined back to exact specifications.
  3. New wear components. New pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, seals and timing components go into every engine.
  4. OEM TSB updates applied. Known factory weak points are corrected using the manufacturer's technical service bulletins.
  5. Multi-point testing. Pressure, compression and leak-down tests confirm the engine is sealed and healthy.
  6. SIM dyno testing. Horsepower and torque are verified before the engine ships.

  • Remanufactured cylinder head
  • New pistons and rings
  • New main and rod bearings
  • Balanced and tested rotating assembly

1.4L Chrysler MultiAir Engine FAQ

What vehicles use the 1.4L Chrysler MultiAir engine?

The 1.4L MultiAir was used in the 2013–2016 Dodge Dart, 2015–2018 Jeep Renegade, 2012–2019 Fiat 500 (including the 500 Turbo and 500 Abarth), 2014–2020 Fiat 500L, 2016–2018 Fiat 500X and 2017–2020 Fiat 124 Spider. Most use the 1.4L MultiAir Turbo; the base Fiat 500 uses the non-turbo version. Always confirm by VIN.

How much does a remanufactured 1.4L MultiAir engine cost?

Price depends on your vehicle and whether it is the turbo or non-turbo 1.4L. Get a VIN-matched price through our Fast Quote form or at 800-731-3177 (press 1). Most Fraser engines have no upfront core charge and ship free to commercial addresses.

What warranty comes with a Fraser 1.4L engine?

Up to a 5-year / unlimited-mile parts and labor warranty on select products, honored nationwide, with optional No-Fault protection.

What are the most common 1.4L MultiAir engine problems?

MultiAir actuator failure, damage from low or degraded oil, turbocharger failure on turbo models, and valve damage from a broken timing belt.

Is the 1.4L MultiAir an interference engine?

Yes. A broken timing belt lets the pistons strike the valves, which usually bends valves and can damage pistons and the cylinder head.

Is a remanufactured engine better than a used 1.4L engine?

A remanufactured engine is rebuilt with new wear parts, tested and starts at zero miles with a long warranty. A used engine has unknown history and usually a short warranty, which is risky on an engine as oil-sensitive as the 1.4L.

How fast can I get a 1.4L engine?

In-stock engines ordered before 3 PM EST typically arrive in 2–3 days.

What oil does the 1.4L MultiAir engine use?

Full synthetic SAE 5W-40 meeting Chrysler specification MS-12991. Keep it full and clean, since the MultiAir system runs on engine oil pressure.

Do I have to send back my old 1.4L engine?

Yes, the core is returned after installation. Most products have no upfront core fee, and core pickup is free.
