Jeep Wrangler 3.6 engine
JK (2012–2018), JL and Gladiator. Our Wrangler-only Advantage build is set up for the JK’s ERB installation.
Wrangler engines →Zero-mile 3.6L Pentastar engines for the Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator and Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500 and ProMaster, Dodge Charger, Challenger and Durango, and Chrysler 300 and Pacifica. Every unit is remanufactured with the rocker arm, head and oil-housing problems corrected, matched to your VIN, and shipped nationwide with up to a 5-year, unlimited-mile warranty.
The engine
Introduced for the 2011 model year, the 3.6-liter Pentastar replaced several older Chrysler V6 engines and went on to power millions of Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles. When one fails, a remanufactured Pentastar is the fastest way to get back on the road with an engine that’s better than the original.
The 3.6L Pentastar is a 60-degree, all-aluminum V6 with dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing on both camshafts. It makes roughly 280 to 305 horsepower depending on the vehicle and year, enough to tow with a Ram 1500, crawl with a Wrangler or cruise in a Charger.
It’s a strong design, but the Pentastar has well-documented weak points: rocker arm and lifter failure (the famous “Pentastar tick”), left cylinder head valve-seat problems on early 2011–2013 engines, and leaking plastic oil filter housings. A Fraser remanufactured 3.6L addresses each one during the build, so you’re not installing the same problem twice.
Every 3.6L Pentastar we sell is remanufactured in-house or sourced from our trusted vendor network, inspected to our standards, and matched to your VIN by a Fraser specialist before it leaves the dock. Ready to choose a build? See all 3.6L Pentastar engines and prices.

Know your engine code
Ordering the right generation matters. A Gen I and a Gen II 3.6 look alike but aren’t direct swaps.

Common 3.6L Pentastar problems
These are the failures our technicians see most on the 3.6 Pentastar, and what a Fraser remanufactured engine does about each one.
SymptomsA ticking or tapping noise from the top of the engine, often worse at idle or cold start, sometimes with a misfire code (P0300–P0306) and a check-engine light.
The Fraser fixEvery Fraser Advantage build gets a new, updated-design valvetrain: rocker arms, lash adjusters and camshafts as required, set up to the latest factory service updates.
SymptomsEarly Gen I engines could drop a valve seat in the driver-side (left) head, often on cylinder 2, causing a misfire, rough idle and low compression.
The Fraser fixHeads are disassembled, pressure-tested and machined; any head that doesn’t pass is replaced. The updated head design is used on affected early engines.
SymptomsOil or coolant seeping down the back of the engine valley, a burning-oil smell, coolant loss or oil in the coolant. The plastic housing can crack with heat cycles.
The Fraser fixThe oil filter housing / cooler assembly is replaced or upgraded with fresh gaskets. Ask about the updated housing when you order.
SymptomsA rattle on cold start, cam/crank correlation codes (P0016–P0019) or a stretched-chain reading on a scan tool.
The Fraser fixEvery remanufactured Pentastar gets a new timing set: chains, guides, tensioners and sprockets, timed to factory specification.
SymptomsCoolant loss with no visible outside leak, overheating, or a sweet smell. The Pentastar water pump is driven by the timing chain behind the front cover.
The Fraser fixA new water pump is installed during assembly so the timing cover doesn’t have to come off again later.
SymptomsLow-oil-pressure warnings, knocking at the bottom end, or metal in the oil after long oil-change intervals.
The Fraser fixThe block is cleaned, decked and honed, the crank is ground or replaced, and new bearings, oil pump and pistons/rings go in. Every engine is pressure-checked.
How we build it
Cost to replace
The total cost of a 3.6L Pentastar engine replacement comes down to three things: the engine, installation labor at your shop, and any parts that should be replaced at the same time (fluids, filters, thermostat, motor mounts, spark plugs).
Fraser’s remanufactured 3.6L engines start at $4,199, with free freight to commercial addresses and a refundable core deposit. Labor varies by vehicle and region; front-drive minivans and some trucks take longer than a Wrangler or Charger, so ask your installer for a quote.
Compared with a used engine of unknown history, a remanufactured Pentastar costs more upfront but comes back zero-mile, with the known failure points fixed and a multi-year warranty. Need to spread out the cost? See financing options.

Questions
The 3.6L Pentastar is used in the Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator and Grand Cherokee; Ram 1500, ProMaster and C/V; Dodge Charger, Challenger, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey and Avenger; Chrysler 300, Pacifica, Voyager, Town & Country and 200; and the Volkswagen Routan, from the 2011 model year onward. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact engine.
Fraser’s remanufactured 3.6L Pentastar engines start at $4,199, and Fraser Advantage™ builds with all factory TSB updates run $4,799 to $5,999 depending on engine code and application. A refundable $600 core deposit applies unless it’s waived on a commercial delivery, and shipping to commercial addresses is free. See current pricing on our 3.6L Pentastar product page.
Gen I (engine code ERB) was used from 2011 into the late 2010s. The Gen II “Pentastar Upgrade” (codes such as ERC, ERG and ERF) arrived from the 2016 model year in many vehicles and adds two-step variable valve lift, higher compression and other changes. The two are not interchangeable without changes, which is why we verify by VIN.
The engine code is on the sales code label and in your build data, and the engine is identified by the 8th character of your 17-digit VIN. The simplest way: send us your VIN or use our free VIN decoder, and a Fraser specialist confirms the exact engine before your order ships.
The best-known cause is a failing rocker arm or hydraulic lash adjuster, which can wear the camshaft lobe and cause a misfire. Every Fraser Advantage 3.6L gets a new, updated-design valvetrain to fix it.
If the engine has spun a bearing, has low compression, or has a cracked head or block, a remanufactured long block is usually the faster and more reliable fix. It comes back zero-mile, with every wear part replaced and a warranty. A local rebuild can work for minor top-end issues, but it typically replaces only the failed parts.
A used engine has unknown history and the same wear as the one you’re replacing, with a short warranty if any. A remanufactured Fraser engine is fully disassembled, machined and rebuilt with new wear parts, then backed by up to a 5-year, unlimited-mile warranty.
The standard remanufactured build carries a 3-year / unlimited-mile warranty, and Fraser Advantage™ builds carry up to a 5-year / unlimited-mile warranty. No-Fault warranty upgrades are also available at checkout.
An assembled long block (block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, cylinder heads, camshafts, valvetrain, timing set, oil pump and water pump), a gasket set, break-in instructions and warranty paperwork. Intake, exhaust manifolds, sensors and accessories transfer from your old engine.
Most in-stock units ship in 2–3 business days by freight, crated on a pallet. Shipping is free to commercial addresses, and liftgate or residential delivery can be added.
Yes. A $600 refundable core deposit applies. On commercial deliveries you can waive the deposit by signing our Core Waiver and returning your old engine within 30 days, and we arrange core pickup.
Yes. Fraser offers financing through Affirm and PayTomorrow, subject to approval, so you can get your Jeep, Ram or Dodge back on the road and pay over time.
The core engine is shared, but oil pans, accessory mounting, oil filter housings and engine codes differ by vehicle and year. That’s why every Fraser order is matched to your VIN.
A well-maintained Pentastar commonly reaches high mileage, but rocker arm wear, oil filter housing leaks and overdue oil changes shorten its life. A Fraser remanufactured engine resets the clock with new wear parts and current factory updates.
