Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s set the stage. The Expedition debuted in 1997 as Ford’s answer to the growing demand for large SUVs that offered ample space without compromising on power. Essentially a Ford F-150 with a three-row cabin, the Expedition was Ford’s move to capture the market that was leaning toward bigger, more spacious vehicles.
The Expedition started strong right out of the gate with a 4.6L or 5.4L V8 engine option. The SUV was spacious, comfortable, and utilitarian, and it instantly caught the eye of families and adventurers alike. With the option of rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, it was versatile enough to cater to different needs.
The second-generation Expedition brought in some upgrades, most notably an independent rear suspension—a feature that set it apart in its category. This new setup offered a smoother ride and more cargo space, making it more appealing to families on the go.
Ah, here’s where things start getting really interesting. The third-gen Expedition got an aesthetic facelift and an interior overhaul, bringing in more tech features and comfort than ever before. Ford introduced the Expedition EL during this period, offering even more cargo space and a longer wheelbase. A 5.4L V8 remained the sole engine option, but it was now more refined and efficient.
A landmark moment for the Expedition came in 2015 when Ford swapped the V8 for a 3.5L EcoBoost V6. Though some skeptics questioned the smaller engine, the EcoBoost delivered on both power and fuel efficiency, winning over most critics.
In 2018, the Expedition underwent its most transformative redesign yet. With an all-aluminum body, it shed some weight, making it more fuel-efficient. The inside got some love too, with a more modern dashboard, premium materials, and a plethora of tech features like Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system.
The current Expedition offers two versions of the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine: one with 375 horsepower and another that bumps it up to 400. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the SUV delivers a ride that’s both robust and smooth.
