Remanufactured 5.7L HEMI Engines (2003–2008) | Ram 1500, 300C, Charger, Grand Cherokee | Fraser Engines
5.7L HEMI V8 · 2003–2008 · Trusted since 1961

5.7L HEMI Engine Replacement (2003–2008)

The 5.7L HEMI V8 became a cornerstone of modern Chrysler performance: strong horsepower, excellent torque and everyday drivability across Ram trucks, Durango, Grand Cherokee, Commander, 300C, Magnum and Charger. The 2003–2008 first-generation HEMI earned a legendary reputation, but it can develop recurring lifter failure, camshaft wear, Multi-Displacement System (MDS) concerns and oiling-related valvetrain damage over time. Fraser's remanufactured 5.7L HEMI is engineered to correct those weaknesses and deliver long-term reliability.

  • Zero-Mileage Remanufactured Build
  • Upgraded Lifters & Valvetrain
  • MDS & Non-MDS
  • Up to 5-Yr / Unlimited Warranty

Quick Answer: Where to Buy a Remanufactured 2003–2008 5.7L HEMI

Fraser Engines, trusted since 1961, sells zero-mile remanufactured first-generation 5.7L HEMI V8 engines, MDS and non-MDS, for the 2003–2008 Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500, 2004–2008 Dodge Durango, 2005–2008 Chrysler 300C, Dodge Magnum R/T and Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2006–2008 Dodge Charger R/T and Jeep Commander, and 2007–2008 Chrysler Aspen.

Fraser Advantage™ builds use upgraded lifters and valvetrain components to fix the well-known "HEMI tick" and cam failures, and include a 5-year / unlimited-mile warranty plus 1 year of free No-Fault. Option 3 adds a new oil pan and timing cover so nothing from the damaged engine is reused. The Standard option includes 3 years / unlimited miles. Call 800-731-3177 (press 1 for sales).

What Is the HEMI Tick?

Why lifter failure takes out the whole engine

The "HEMI tick" is a ticking noise most often caused by a failing hydraulic roller lifter. When a lifter's roller stops turning or the lifter collapses, it grinds against the camshaft lobe. The lobe wears away, and the metal it sheds travels through the oil to the bearings, pump and every other moving part. By the time the tick is loud, the cam is often already damaged.

A used HEMI has the same factory lifters. Fraser Advantage™ builds replace them with upgraded lifters and valvetrain components, restore the cam and heads, and clear the oil passages. Option 3 goes further with a new oil pan and timing cover, so no metal-contaminated parts from the old engine come back.

Common 5.7L HEMI Engine Problems

These issues are exactly why a used or junkyard 5.7L HEMI is risky: without correcting the known weak points, the same failures come right back. Most customers start shopping after the famous "HEMI tick," a wiped cam lobe, MDS lifter failure or timing noise.

Lifter failure

Hydraulic roller lifter wear, the "HEMI tick," leads to valvetrain noise, collapsed lifters and internal engine damage.

Camshaft wear

Cam lobes wear from improper oiling or a failed lifter roller, sending metal through the entire engine.

MDS issues

Engines with the Multi-Displacement System can develop lifter and oil-control concerns on the deactivating cylinders.

Oiling system sensitivity

Restricted oil flow accelerates valvetrain wear over time, especially with extended oil-change intervals.

Timing component wear

Timing chains, guides and tensioners wear and affect long-term performance and drivability.

Repeat failure with used engines

A salvage HEMI carries the same lifter, cam and oiling weaknesses, and the same unknown mileage, that killed your original.

Diagnose first

Repair or Replace? Signs You Need a 5.7L HEMI Engine

Some HEMI issues can be repaired externally, but a failed lifter that has wiped the cam, metal in the oil, internal noise, low compression or severe overheating make a replacement engine the better long-term repair.

  • Lifter tick, knocking, rattling or internal noise
  • Overheating damage or repeated coolant loss
  • Low compression or failed leak-down test
  • Misfires that continue after ignition and fuel repairs
  • Timing chain rattle, MDS or timing fault codes
  • Oil pressure warnings or metal in the oil
  • Coolant mixing with oil or a failed head gasket
  • Replacement recommended by a licensed repair shop
True remanufacturing, not a budget rebuild

Know the difference

Used 5.7L HEMI vs. Low-Cost Rebuild vs. Fraser Remanufactured

A used 5.7L HEMI may seem like the lower-cost option upfront, but it often comes with unknown mileage, hidden internal wear and the same factory lifter and oiling issues that caused the original engine to fail. Fraser Advantage™ engines are fully remanufactured, upgraded and tested, the smarter choice for long-term value and dependability.

5.7L HEMI Installation Tips to Prevent Repeat Failure

  • Flush or replace the oil cooler and lines
  • Replace the oil pan and pickup if metal was found
  • Flush the radiator and cooling system
  • Replace the water pump and thermostat
  • Check exhaust manifold bolts for leaks
  • Prime the oil system before first start
  • Use the specified oil grade and change it on time
  • Change oil after the first 500 miles

Metal left in the oil cooler or pan can ruin a new engine, which is why Option 3 includes a new pan and timing cover. Your engine ships with Fraser's installation guidelines. Follow them closely and keep your receipts to keep your warranty in force.

How to Order Your 5.7L HEMI Engine

5.7L HEMI Engine Replacement FAQs

Does the Fraser HEMI fix the lifter and camshaft problems?

Yes. Fraser Advantage™ builds use upgraded lifters and valvetrain components, a restored cam and heads, and restored oil passages, correcting the root causes of the HEMI tick and wiped cam lobes.

What is the HEMI tick?

A ticking noise most often caused by a failing hydraulic roller lifter. If the roller stops turning, it wipes the cam lobe and sends metal through the engine. Exhaust manifold bolt leaks can also tick, so diagnosis matters.

Is a remanufactured 5.7L HEMI better than a used engine?

Yes. A used HEMI has unknown mileage and the same factory lifters. A Fraser HEMI is zero-mile with all-new internal and timing parts, and Fraser Advantage™ adds upgraded lifters and a 5-year / unlimited-mile warranty with free No-Fault.

What are common 5.7L HEMI engine problems?

Lifter failure (the HEMI tick), camshaft wear, MDS lifter and oil-control issues, oiling sensitivity with long oil-change intervals, and timing chain wear.

What's the difference between Option 2 and Option 3?

Both are Fraser Advantage™ builds with upgraded lifters and a 5-year / unlimited-mile warranty plus free No-Fault. Option 3 also includes a new oil pan and timing cover, so nothing from the damaged engine is reused.

What's the difference between the Standard and Fraser Advantage™ options?

Standard is a fully remanufactured HEMI with a 3-year / unlimited-mile warranty. Fraser Advantage™ adds upgraded lifters and valvetrain, restored cam and heads, improved oiling and all TSB updates, with a 5-year / unlimited-mile warranty and 1 year of free No-Fault.

Will a 2009-and-newer HEMI fit my 2003–2008 vehicle?

Not as a direct swap. The 2009+ "Eagle" HEMI has variable cam timing and other changes. A 2003–2008 vehicle should get a first-generation 5.7L HEMI, and we confirm by VIN.

Does Fraser help verify 5.7L HEMI engine fitment?

Yes. Fitment varies by VIN, year, MDS vs. non-MDS, truck vs. car, emissions and sensors, so we match every order to your VIN.

Can Fraser ship my 5.7L HEMI engine to my repair shop?

Yes. We ship directly to commercial repair facilities, free in the continental U.S., and coordinate free commercial core pickup after installation.

Is a No-Fault warranty upgrade available?

Yes. Optional No-Fault upgrades from 1 to 5 years are available on every option, and Fraser Advantage™ options already include 1 year of free No-Fault coverage.
