Fraser Engines · 2007–2009 5.3L Gen IV Vortec Program

GM 5.3L Vortec 5300 replacement engines built for reliability

The 2007–2009 GM 5.3L Gen IV Vortec (LY5, LMG, LC9, LH6) launched with the GMT900 Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Avalanche and Escalade — and brought Active Fuel Management with it. Fraser remanufactured 5.3L Gen IV engines are built to restore compression, oil pressure and sealing integrity and to correct the AFM lifter, oil-consumption and valvetrain problems this generation is known for.

Common GM 5.3L Gen IV concerns addressed

Built to correct known 5.3L Vortec problems

The Gen IV 5.3L is a strong truck engine, but its AFM lifters, oil-control design and high-mileage wear points are well documented — and they are exactly what Fraser corrects during remanufacturing.

AFM / DOD lifter failure

Collapsed AFM lifters on cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7 cause ticking, misfires (P0300 / P030X) and wiped cam lobes — the #1 reason Gen IV 5.3Ls get replaced.

Oil consumption

AFM oil spray plus a weak PCV design fouls the rings and lets these engines burn a quart every 1,000 miles — which then starves the lifters and bottom end.

Low oil pressure

Worn oil pumps, a leaking pickup-tube O-ring and tired bearings drop pressure and set the stage for bearing failure.

Camshaft & valvetrain wear

A failed lifter quickly wipes the cam lobe and sends metal through the oil system, damaging bearings and the oil pump.

Overheating & head-gasket damage

Dexcool neglect and intake / head-gasket failures let coolant into the oil and warp heads.

Gasket & sealing fatigue

Rear main, oil pan, valley cover, timing cover and valve cover seals leak after years of heat cycling.

Fraser Advantage™ benefits

2007–2009 GM 5.3L Gen IV vehicle fitments

Vehicle applications & VIN-based fitment

GM used the Gen IV 5.3L across its 2007–2009 full-size trucks and SUVs as the iron-block LY5 (VIN J), the flex-fuel iron-block LMG (VIN 0), the flex-fuel aluminum-block LC9 (VIN 3) and the aluminum-block LH6 (VIN M) — all with Active Fuel Management. Block material, flex-fuel hardware, VVT and accessory layout vary — so Fraser matches every order to your VIN before shipment.

Inside the Fraser plant

Our 14-step engine block remanufacturing process

Fraser is committed to delivering engines of exceptional quality and performance. Our rigorous, detailed process ensures every engine meets our high standards and exceeds your expectations.

Step 1 · Engine block disassembly

A thorough visual inspection of each block for casting defects, meticulous disassembly with every part inspected for damage and the cause of failure identified. Oil and water passage plugs are removed to guarantee optimal results during thermal cleaning. Only premium castings are selected — never repaired castings or sleeved blocks on high-performance engines.

Step 2 · Thermal cleaning

Our thermal cleaning system distributes heat evenly through the chamber, avoiding overheating or warping. Components are heated in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere that decomposes combustible hydrocarbons and leaves parts dry. The Ace RKE 230 oven is used exclusively for cast-iron blocks.

Step 3 · Shot blasting

Stainless-steel shot removes surface contamination like rust for a smoother finish — vital for detecting surface and subsurface defects — while the peening process imparts compression strength to the metal.

Step 4 · Magnafluxing

Magnetic particle inspection detects cracks and imperfections in ferrous engine parts, ensuring the highest quality for our cast-iron blocks.

Step 5 · High-pressure wash

Aluminum blocks first go through the AXE SW20 OS spray cleaning system, whose multi-integrated nozzles remove all foreign material — crucial for a thorough inspection.

Step 6 · Sonic cleaning

Ultrasonic cleaning — the benchmark in cleanliness — reaches inaccessible areas and breaks the bonds holding small particles to surfaces before pressure testing.

Step 7 · Pressure testing

The Delta pressure tester double-checks for pinholes after magnafluxing and dye testing, ensuring the integrity of every casting used in our products.

Step 8 · Block preparation

After a complete visual inspection we repair minor casting defects, remove broken bolts, tap threads and perform gasket surface repairs to minimize stock removal.

Step 9 · CNC machining

The RMC CNC V40 enclosed machining center measures and levels blocks and measures deck heights and cylinder bore sizes, eliminating operator error. It determines the Ra finish based on block type and gasket, using CBN cutters and checking surface finish with the Mitutoyo SJ-301.

Step 10 · Rod reconditioning

The Sunnen LBB-1600 hone, accurate to within .0001″, reconditions rods and fits pins so honed bores are equal to or better than new. High-performance engines get ARP high-strength bolts and nuts first.

Step 11 · Cylinder honing

Rottler’s newest cylinder honing machine finishes cylinders within .0001″ roundness and straightness, continuously analyzing and correcting the bore to hold the critical oil clearances modern engine designs demand.

Step 12 · Second high-pressure wash

After precise machining, every block undergoes a second high-pressure wash cycle for absolute cleanliness before final assembly.

Step 13 · Sonic cleaning before assembly

All parts are ultrasonically cleaned prior to assembly, reaching every surface and internal area to meet the most stringent cleanliness standards.

Step 14 · Assembly & final inspection

Each assembler conducts a thorough visual inspection and measures parts for proper size. Blocks are fitted with new cam bearings, oil restrictors, relief valves and new water and oil plugs; heads are installed with new bolts and gaskets and each cylinder’s seal integrity is checked. A final inspection by our assembly manager signs off every engine.

2007–2009 GM 5.3L engine replacement FAQs

Is a remanufactured GM 5.3L better than a used engine?

Yes, for most owners. A used Gen IV 5.3L may already have a collapsing AFM lifter, worn cam lobe, oil consumption or metal in the oil. A Fraser remanufactured 5.3L is a zero-mile build with an upgraded block, updated heads, new pistons, rings, bearings, lifters, timing components, gaskets and seals, VIN-verified fitment and a 3- or 5-year unlimited-mile warranty.

What vehicles used the 2007–2009 GM 5.3L Gen IV engine?

Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Express and TrailBlazer; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, Savana and Envoy; Buick Rainier and Saab 9-7X. 2007 “Classic” body trucks still use the Gen III 5.3L — confirm by VIN.

How do I know if I have an LY5, LMG, LC9 or LH6?

Check the 8th digit of your VIN: J = LY5 iron block, 0 = LMG flex-fuel iron block, 3 = LC9 flex-fuel aluminum block, M = LH6 aluminum block. Fraser confirms every order against your full VIN.

What is the DOD / AFM-Deleted option and do I need a tune?

Option 4 replaces the Active Fuel Management lifters, camshaft and valley-cover lifter-oil manifold with non-AFM components so the engine runs on all eight cylinders permanently — eliminating the most common Gen IV failure. It requires a compatible calibration (tune) to disable AFM in the PCM, and it is intended for off-road, racing or non-emissions-controlled use where permitted by law; it may not be legal on pollution-controlled vehicles in California.

What’s the difference between the four options?

Option 1 ($3,299) is the Standard reman long block with a 3-year warranty. Option 2 ($3,499) is the Fraser Advantage™ build adding the oil pump, oil pan, timing cover and valley cover with a 5-year warranty plus 1 year of free No-Fault. Option 3 ($4,199) is Fully Loaded — Option 2 plus valve covers. Option 4 ($3,999) is the Fraser Advantage™ DOD / AFM-Deleted build with oil pump and valley cover and a 3-year warranty.

Can Fraser ship my 5.3L engine to my repair shop?

Yes. Shipping and core pickup are free to any commercial address in the continental United States.

Is a No-Fault warranty upgrade available?

Yes. 1- to 5-year No-Fault protection ($99–$499) can be added at checkout. Options 2 and 3 already include 1 year of No-Fault coverage free.
